In every bottle of Mama Maisa’s Pepper Sauce, there is more than heat. There is history. There is family. There is a century of Caribbean tradition, carefully preserved and passionately shared.
The award-winning, family-owned brand, inspired by a century-old recipe, is on a mission to bring the authentic flavors of the islands to tables across America, one festival, one partnership, and one bottle at a time.
The story of Mama Maisa’s begins with Rosalie “Miss Anna” Denis, whose handcrafted pepper sauce became a beloved staple of family gatherings in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The inspiration and early traditions behind the recipe originated in St Lucia, where the founders’ mother and grandmother (Maisa) was born. In the 1950s, the family immigrated to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, bringing their local cooking traditions and homemade pepper sauce culture with them.
Passed down through four generations, that recipe is now the foundation of a growing specialty food brand that is capturing the attention of food lovers, chefs, and cultural enthusiasts alike.
For co-founder David Denis, the mission has always been bigger than pepper sauce.
“Every bottle tells a story of family, resilience, culture and Caribbean heritage,” he said. “Every festival and partnership gives us another opportunity to share the authentic flavors and traditions of the U.S. Virgin Islands with new communities. We are proud to preserve our family’s legacy while introducing Caribbean cuisine to consumers across the country.”
Mama Maisa’s has spent recent months connecting with the Caribbean diaspora and introducing new audiences to its bold, authentic flavors at some of the most vibrant cultural events in the United States and the Caribbean.
From the CaribMask Caribbean Carnival in Raleigh, North Carolina, to the King of the Wing VI culinary competition in St. Thomas, where the brand served as an official pepper sauce sponsor alongside Virgin Islands chefs, each event has been an opportunity to share not just a product, but a story.
At Taste of St. Croix, attendees got a taste of the family history behind the sauce. At Caribbean POSH WKD, the brand connected with entrepreneurs and cultural influencers from across the region. And at Queen City Carnival in Charlotte, Mama Maisa’s partnered with KJB Royal Seed Kuisine to showcase Caribbean fusion cuisine at its finest.
The brand’s momentum continued in the first week of September, with its participation in the West Indian American Day Carnival in Brooklyn, New York, one of the largest celebrations of Caribbean culture and heritage in the United States.
For Mama Maisa’s, the event represents more than product exposure. It is a homecoming of sorts, a chance to connect the Caribbean diaspora through food while celebrating the traditions of the U.S. Virgin Islands on one of the world’s biggest cultural stages.
Following its Brooklyn appearance, Mama Maisa’s will continue its event momentum with the Rawleigh Oyster Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina, in November 2026. The company is also pursuing additional retail, foodservice, and distribution relationships throughout the United States as it works to introduce Caribbean flavors to a broader consumer audience.
An upcoming editorial feature in Raleigh Magazine will highlight the brand’s commitment to Caribbean culinary traditions and its continued growth into new markets.
Mama Maisa’s Pepper Sauce is an award-winning, family-owned Caribbean food company that combines authentic ingredients with a commitment to quality, heritage, and community. But for those who know the story behind the bottle, it is so much more.
It is a bridge between generations. A celebration of resilience. A taste of home for the diaspora and a warm welcome for those discovering Caribbean cuisine for the first time.
“Our mission has always been bigger than producing great pepper sauce,” Denis said.
And with every bottle, every festival, and every partnership, Mama Maisa’s is proving that food is the most powerful ambassador of all.
