Johnisha Calliste-Richardson never set out to build a business. She was just trying to tame her own dry hair.

Growing up in St. Andrew, Grenada, she had aloe vera growing in her backyard, a plant so common on the island that it’s almost taken for granted. But for Johnisha, it was a revelation.
“I started using it from there,” she recalls. “Then I realised it makes my hair very soft, very manageable.”

That humble backyard discovery has since blossomed into Naturalique Explozion, a handcrafted, aloe vera-based hair care line that she hopes will turn heads across Grenada and catch the attention of the diaspora.

The name Naturalique Explozion reflects both Johnisha’s philosophy and her product’s impact.

“I’m more of a natural kind of person,” she explains. “The ‘Explozion’ is more like the products are very effective, of high quality.”

What started with just five products has grown into a line of ten, including shampoo, conditioner, leave-in treatments, hair butter, hair oil, hair mist, styling cream, hair mousse, and detangler. Each product is made from scratch, by hand, in three careful phases: the water phase, the oil phase, and the cool-down phase.

The first person to test Naturalique Explozion was her husband, a willing guinea pig with a growing problem.

“He had a lot of bald spots,” Johnisha says with a laugh. “When I made the shampoo, he tried it right away. Then he was like, ‘Babe, I find it working, I could feel it.'”

Encouraged by his success, she gave samples to coworkers and neighbours. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

“I got great, great feedback,” she says. “From there, I started to gain more customers’ loyalty and improved on my production.”

When Johnisha saw the advertisement for the Grenada Diaspora Homecoming Marketplace on Facebook, she didn’t hesitate.

“Right away I clicked on it and I signed up,” she says. “Every minute I was looking at my email to get my confirmation.”

The Marketplace, held as part of the larger Diaspora Homecoming Forum 2026, was the perfect platform for her growing brand.

“Coming here is all about brand awareness,” she says. “Trying to see who have hair concerns that I can give some educational background and try to help them in any way that I can.”

For Johnisha, the diaspora connection is about more than making sales, it’s about building a future.

“I do want to export or try to go regional,” she says. “Having Grenadians who live in different countries come to their homeland and see such great products available, we can build such investments, collaboration, and persons from other countries can purchase Grenadian-based products.”

Grenada has more to offer than just sunshine and spices. It has innovation, quality, and entrepreneurship, all waiting to be discovered.

Johnisha is also a mother of three: a five-year-old son, a three-year-old daughter, and a three-month-old newborn. Balancing motherhood with entrepreneurship is no small feat, but she is determined.

Her story is a testament to the resilience and creativity of Grenadian’s and a reminder that the next big idea can start with something as simple as a plant in your own backyard.
