Trinidad and Tobago’s own Kes the Band reached a milestone moment last weekend. They became the first soca group to headline the legendary Budweiser Stage in Toronto.
For lead vocalist Kees Dieffenthaller, the performance meant more than just music. It was a powerful representation of Caribbean pride..
“This is for the Caribbean people,” Kes shared in an interview ahead of the show. “From our roots to a world stage — that’s the journey we’re celebrating.”
The concert was a major career highlight for the band, who are celebrating 20 years in music. It also showed soca’s growing impact on the global music scene with more than 14,000 fans filled the open-air amphitheater.
The event celebrated not just soca, but Caribbean culture as a whole. An all-star lineup of Caribbean talent added to the historic night. Artists included Yung Bredda, Voice, David Rudder, Teddyson John, Ravi B, and Tessanne Chin.
Each performer brought their own unique flavour to the stage.
Following the performance, Kes took to Instagram to express his gratitude:
“We give eternal thanks. WOW!!! Words cannot express!! We made history in Toronto. Sold out the @budweiserstage with SOCA! Thank you everyone.”
This landmark concert is a reminder of just how far soca has come and how much further it’s ready to go.
