Grenadian Olympic champion Kirani James is set to receive one of the region’s highest public honours after being selected to appear on the EC$5 banknote as part of a major redesign of Eastern Caribbean currency.

Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell confirmed that the celebrated 400-metre sprinter will be featured on the note when the new series enters circulation in 2027, marking a significant shift in how the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) represents its shared identity.

The initiative forms part of a wider decision by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) to replace the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on its banknotes with distinguished figures from across the region. The move was approved by the ECCB Monetary Council during its 105th meeting held in St. Vincent and the Grenadines in July 2023.

Kirani James, who made history by becoming Grenada’s first Olympic gold medallist at the 2012 London Games, has long been regarded as one of the Caribbean’s most accomplished athletes. His inclusion on the EC$5 note recognises not only his sporting achievements but also his role in elevating Grenada’s profile on the global stage.

ECCB Governor Timothy Antoine has previously indicated that work on the redesigned notes is progressing steadily, with the institution expecting the first series to be unveiled and introduced into circulation in 2027.

The Eastern Caribbean dollar serves as the common currency for eight territories: Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Anguilla and Montserrat. The currency has been in circulation since October 1965 and remains a key symbol of economic integration within the sub-region.

James’ accomplishments extend beyond his Olympic triumph. The Grenadian sprinter won the 400-metre title at the 2011 World Championships before capturing Olympic gold the following year, cementing his place among the Caribbean’s sporting greats.

News of his selection for the redesigned banknote has been met with widespread praise online, with many describing the honour as a fitting tribute to an athlete who has represented Grenada with distinction throughout his career. Social media users have highlighted his humility, consistency and lasting contribution to national pride, celebrating the decision to immortalise his legacy in everyday currency.
