The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will honour one of West Indies cricket’s most celebrated figures by naming its Hall of Fame player trophy the Sir Garry Sobers Award.

The award will be presented annually to the player selected for induction into the CPL Hall of Fame, linking the league’s newest recognition programme with the legacy of the legendary Barbadian cricketer.

The announcement comes following the introduction of the CPL Hall of Fame, which will recognise two individuals each year: a former player and an off-field contributor whose impact has helped shape Caribbean cricket and the league.

Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo and respected broadcaster and former fast bowler Ian Bishop have been selected as the first inductees.

Sir Garry Sobers’ Legacy Takes Centre Stage

Widely considered one of cricket’s greatest all-rounders, Sir Garry Sobers remains an enduring symbol of the golden history of West Indies cricket.

The CPL received the support of the Sobers family to use his name for the player award, giving future Hall of Fame recipients a trophy connected to one of the sport’s most influential Caribbean figures.

The inaugural Sir Garry Sobers Award is scheduled to be presented during the CPL Hall of Fame Gala Dinner on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at Hilton Barbados.

CPL Chief Executive Officer Pete Russell described the decision as an important milestone for the league, highlighting both Sobers’ extraordinary career and the significance his name brings to the Hall of Fame.

Russell also expressed appreciation to the Sobers family for allowing the league to associate the award with Sir Garry’s legacy, saying it would give future recipients an honour they could carry with pride.

Gala to Support Caribbean Prostate Cancer Initiatives

Beyond celebrating cricket, the Hall of Fame Gala Dinner will also support the Sir Clive Lloyd Healthcare Foundation and its work surrounding prostate cancer awareness, testing and early detection throughout the Caribbean.

The initiative adds a wider regional purpose to an evening already set to celebrate two towering names in West Indies cricket — Sir Garry Sobers and Sir Clive Lloyd.

With Bravo and Bishop becoming the CPL Hall of Fame’s inaugural inductees and the player trophy now bearing Sobers’ name, the September 15 event will mark the beginning of a new tradition celebrating Caribbean cricket excellence, legacy and service.
