Grenada Claims First Gold of Glasgow 2026

Grenada’s Lindon Victor has once again etched his name into the history books, winning a record-breaking third consecutive Commonwealth Games Decathlon title and securing Grenada’s first gold medal of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The victory makes Victor the first decathlete in Commonwealth Games history to win three successive gold medals in the event, adding Glasgow 2026 to his previous triumphs at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022.

Strong Finish Seals Historic Victory

Victor’s path to gold was far from straightforward. He ended the opening day of competition in fifth place and remained behind Canada’s Damian Warner after seven of the Decathlon’s 10 events.

However, the Grenadian athlete delivered a commanding performance on the second day, using strong displays in the Pole Vault and Javelin to move into the lead before doing enough in the concluding 1500m to secure the championship.

The comeback highlighted Victor’s ability to remain composed under pressure and capitalize on the events that have long been among his strongest.

Overcoming Setbacks

The competition presented additional challenges after Victor’s best discus throw was ruled out due to a measurement error. Despite the setback, he responded with season-best performances in both the Pole Vault and Javelin to build an advantage over the field.

His resilience proved decisive as he held off a strong challenge from reigning Olympic champion Damian Warner of Canada.

Warner finished with the silver medal on 8,036 points, while India’s Tejaswin Shankar claimed bronze with 7,976 points.

Experience Made the Difference

Speaking after the victory, Victor acknowledged that the competition was not his smoothest performance but expressed gratitude for securing another Commonwealth title.

“It wasn’t the prettiest Decathlon and it wasn’t the best conditions, but to be able to come out and win this three times, I feel blessed,” he said.

The 33-year-old admitted his competition got off to a slow start but credited his support team for helping him remain focused throughout the two-day event.

“I just tried to stay locked in and tried to stay focused and listen to the people in my corner. They always believed that there was a chance that I could win it,” he said.

Reflecting on his first Commonwealth title in 2018, Victor said experience has changed the way he approaches the Decathlon.

He explained that earlier in his career, poor performances in individual events would have affected his confidence, but he has since learned that anything can happen over the course of the 10-event competition and that staying mentally engaged is critical.

A Victory Dedicated to Grenada

For Victor, the historic achievement was also an opportunity to give back to the country that has supported him throughout his career.

“Grenada pours so much love into me and this is my way of showing love back to them,” he said. “They supported me even when I messed up in multiple events. They’ve always had my back.”

With three consecutive Commonwealth Games titles now to his name, Lindon Victor has further strengthened his legacy as one of Grenada’s greatest sporting ambassadors while delivering another unforgettable moment for the nation on the international stage.
