West Indies delivered one of the most remarkable performances in men’s T20 International cricket, successfully chasing down a target of 250 against India in Ranchi to secure a thrilling victory and level the three-match series 1-1.

Captain Shai Hope produced an unbeaten 102 from just 45 deliveries, while Sherfane Rutherford smashed 84 off 37 balls as the Caribbean side reached 253/4 in 18.3 overs.

The extraordinary performance marked the second-highest successful run chase in men’s T20I history and the highest ever recorded by West Indies in the format.

Only South Africa’s successful pursuit of 259 against West Indies in 2023 ranks higher.

India Sets Daunting 250-Run Target

After being sent in to bat, India capitalised on favourable conditions to post an imposing 249/5, their highest T20I total against West Indies.

Sanju Samson led the charge with an aggressive 82 off 41 deliveries, returning to form after a series of disappointing performances.

Ishan Kishan contributed 43 from 22 balls, helping India maintain momentum during the early stages of the innings.

The hosts accelerated further towards the end, with Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma combining for a rapid 83-run partnership from just 33 deliveries.

Iyer struck 40 off 18 balls, while Varma added 44 from 18, pushing India’s total towards the 250-run mark.

Despite the aggressive batting display, Roston Chase emerged as West Indies’ most successful bowler, claiming three wickets, while Shamar Springer finished with two.

West Indies Recover From Early Setbacks

The Caribbean side’s chase began disastrously when Mayank Yadav dismissed Kamil Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer off consecutive deliveries in the opening over.

However, Hope responded with an exceptional display of attacking cricket, refusing to allow the early dismissals to derail the innings.

Rovman Powell contributed a quick 24 off 13 balls, helping West Indies reach 72 runs during the six-over Powerplay.

Although Powell was subsequently dismissed by Yadav, West Indies maintained their aggressive approach.

Rutherford’s arrival transformed the contest as he joined Hope in a powerful partnership that shifted the momentum firmly towards the visitors.

Hope and Rutherford Deliver Match-Winning Partnership

Hope and Rutherford combined for 120 runs from just 54 deliveries, dismantling India’s bowling attack with an array of powerful strokes.

Rutherford’s 84 from 37 balls included a relentless assault on both pace and spin before Kuldeep Yadav eventually ended his innings.

Hope continued his outstanding performance, reaching his century in 45 balls with a six over wide long-on.

His unbeaten 102 anchored the historic chase and demonstrated his ability to lead under pressure.

Romario Shepherd provided the finishing touches with an unbeaten 34 from only 13 balls, including three fours and three sixes.

West Indies completed the chase with nine deliveries remaining, sealing one of the most memorable victories in their T20I history.

India Acknowledges West Indies’ Batting Brilliance

India head coach Gautam Gambhir admitted that his team struggled to contain the West Indies batting lineup despite making early breakthroughs.

“We need to find a way to try and stop the opposition, especially when they lost two wickets in the first over and then lost three in the first six,” Gambhir said following the match.

“Obviously it was tough. But again, credit to West Indies, the way Sherfane Rutherford and Shai Hope batted. We know that they are world-class batters, especially in this format. So obviously it was tough on us, but we are going to keep improving.”

Gambhir also stressed the importance of examining the team’s performance rather than overlooking the defeat.

“You don’t shrug off any defeat,” he said. “If you want to keep improving, you don’t want to put anything under the carpet.”

West Indies Continue Record-Breaking Tour

The victory in Ranchi adds to an impressive series of batting achievements for West Indies during their tour of India.

Earlier in the tour, the Caribbean side successfully chased 352 in an ODI against India in New Chandigarh, setting a new national record for their highest successful chase in that format.

Hope played a central role in both performances, reinforcing his importance to the West Indies batting lineup.

The latest victory also places West Indies among the leading teams in the history of successful T20I run chases.

With the three-match series level at 1-1, attention now turns to the final encounter in Indore on October 11, where both teams will compete for the series victory.
