A proposed US$100 million eco-resort development on the Grenadine island of Mayreau is expected to create employment opportunities, support local businesses and introduce new sustainability initiatives as part of a major private-sector tourism investment.

Invest SVG and Luxembourg-based real estate developer Nativo Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to advance SOMA Mayreau, a hospitality and environmental conservation project designed to combine luxury tourism with community development.

The agreement was formalised on September 30, 2026, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, establishing a framework for collaboration between the investment promotion agency and the international developer.

SOMA Mayreau to Feature More Than 100 Accommodation Units

The proposed resort will feature more than 100 accommodation keys, including guestrooms and hotel villas, alongside wellness facilities, restaurants and marine-based activities.

The development is intended to strengthen Mayreau’s position within the Grenadines’ tourism market while attracting visitors seeking hospitality experiences connected to the island’s natural environment.

According to the project outline, SOMA Mayreau will be financed entirely through private investment, combining international private capital with commercial bank financing.

No government funding is required for the proposed US$100 million development.

Construction is planned to take approximately 24 months, although a specific commencement date has not been announced.

Local Employment and Business Opportunities at the Centre of Development

Beyond expanding Mayreau’s accommodation offerings, the project is designed to generate economic opportunities for residents and businesses.

During construction, the developer intends to prioritise local employment, workforce training and procurement from businesses operating within the community.

Once operational, the resort is expected to create ongoing demand for services across several sectors, including transportation, marine excursions, food and beverage supply, and other tourism-related activities.

These opportunities could extend the project’s economic impact beyond the resort itself, supporting businesses throughout Mayreau and the wider Grenadines.

The development also includes proposed apprenticeship programmes aimed at helping residents acquire skills relevant to the hospitality and tourism industries.

Environmental Conservation and Infrastructure Improvements Proposed

Environmental management is another component of the SOMA Mayreau development.

Nativo Group has outlined a strategy addressing water use, waste management and resource efficiency, with an emphasis on reducing waste generation and keeping reusable materials on the island.

The developer has also identified several potential community projects intended to strengthen local infrastructure and preserve Mayreau’s heritage.

Among the proposals is the restoration of the historic Mayreau Parish Church complex.

Other initiatives under consideration include improvements to water and energy infrastructure, village enhancement projects, support for local food production and environmental restoration.

The developer has indicated that priorities for these initiatives will be established through consultation with residents, allowing the community to participate in determining which projects should move forward.

Government Emphasises Protection of Mayreau’s Identity

Minister of Foreign Investment Dwight Fitzgerald Bramble, who has oversight of Invest SVG, stressed that major tourism developments must consider the needs of the communities in which they operate.

“Mayreau is one of the treasures of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Any significant investment on the island must respect its character, its environment and, above all, the interests of its people,” Minister Bramble stated.

“What is encouraging about the SOMA Mayreau proposal is the attention being given to the responsibilities that come with developing on a small island. Reliable infrastructure, responsible waste and water management, jobs and training, while providing a meaningful voice for residents that must be part of that work.”

His comments highlighted the importance of balancing investment opportunities with environmental protection and community participation, particularly on smaller Caribbean islands.

Nativo Group Outlines Long-Term Vision for Mayreau

Danny Germaine, Chief Executive Officer of Nativo Group, said the developer’s ambitions extend beyond constructing a hospitality property.

“The measure of success cannot simply be the hotel we create. If we are going to build and operate here for the long term, the investment has to create meaningful opportunities for the people already living and working on Mayreau,” Germaine noted.

“We want SOMA to contribute positively to the island, economically, environmentally and as part of the community.”

The proposed development reflects growing interest in tourism investments that incorporate environmental considerations and community benefits alongside commercial objectives.

For Mayreau, the project could represent a significant addition to its tourism infrastructure, with the potential to create new opportunities for residents while attracting investment to the island.

However, SOMA Mayreau remains a proposed development, with the recently signed MOU establishing a framework for cooperation rather than confirming the completion of the project.

Further details regarding construction timelines and implementation are expected as planning progresses.
