Barbados Honours Sir Garfield Sobers: A Farewell Tribute

Barbados came together in a powerful display of gratitude and national pride as thousands paid their final respects to National Hero Sir Garfield Sobers during a State Funeral that celebrated the extraordinary life and legacy of one of cricket’s greatest figures.

A ceremonial procession made its way from Fontabelle to Kensington Oval, with the casket of the legendary cricketer transported on a gun carriage accompanied by military personnel and senior government officials. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, Cabinet ministers, and members of the Sobers family joined the procession, reflecting the significance of the occasion for the nation.

Along the route, Barbadians gathered in silence and reflection, honouring a man whose achievements transcended sport and helped establish Barbados as a respected force on the international stage. Retired security officer Roderick Brewster, who knew Sir Garry from childhood in Bayland, praised the organisation of the ceremony and the respectful conduct of those in attendance.
