Music mogul Ted Lucas and former Silicon Valley executive Hilmon Sorey have teamed up to launch SPARC South Florida, a $1M startup competition designed to uplift underrepresented tech founders across the Southern United States and the Caribbean. As co-founders of The Source, South Florida’s only Black-led tech hub, the duo is creating new pathways to funding, mentorship, and long-term success for entrepreneurs who are often left out of the mainstream innovation economy
Introducing SPARC South Florida
The Source, a Miami-based innovation hub, has launched SPARC South Florida, a competition tailored to spotlight tech startups often overlooked in traditional investment circles. The program specifically focuses on supporting founders from the South and Caribbean regions with not just funding, but access to the tools and connections needed to grow.
Co-founder Hilmon Sorey, a former Silicon Valley executive with experience scaling over 500 startups, emphasized the initiative’s focus on building solutions rooted in the local community.
“We understand the systemic barriers,” Sorey shared. “That’s why we’re building infrastructure here in Downtown Miami. SPARC isn’t just about pitching, it’s about launching. It’s a catalyst for founders to gain real support, funding, and the networks required for sustainable growth.”
From Music Mogul to Tech Mentor
The Source was also co-founded by Ted Lucas, the influential music executive behind Slip-N-Slide Records, the label that helped shape the careers of Trick Daddy, Trina, Rick Ross, and Plies. Now shifting his focus to the tech world, Lucas is channeling his business acumen into empowering emerging entrepreneurs.
“We’re here to make sure people right here in South Florida and the Caribbean have a shot,” Lucas shared. “I helped artists become stars. Now it’s time to help build the next generation of tech leaders.”
A Life-Changing Opportunity
The grand prize includes $1 million in equity-free capital, alongside strategic guidance, mentorship, and access to a robust network spanning media, entertainment, and tech industries. Even those who don’t take home the top prize will benefit from resources such as a business incubator, marketing assistance, and potential partnerships with key investors and creators.
