For the Grenadian athlete Romel Charles, the path to success hasn’t always been smooth but it’s always been intentional. Whether it’s on the field, or in the gym, the track star is proving that greatness is as much about mindset as it is about raw talent.

We caught up with Romel to talk about motivation, handling pressure at the recent INTERCOL games, and what’s next in his journey.

Q: How did you mentally and physically prepare for your events, and do you feel that preparation paid off?

“I trained physically for the entire year leading up to the Intercol games, which allowed me to get stronger and faster and become the athlete that I am today”, he said. “I was mentally strong entering the Intercol games knowing that I could win my races. So yes, it did pay off and I know I made some mistakes in my races, but I will never quit nor back down.”

Q: What was going through your mind during the race, especially in those final moments?

” In the final moments of my race around the last 200m, I was caged between the other athletes, which made me struggle more than usual to pass them”, he explained. “But at the last 100 meters I was free and that’s when I started pumping my arms and legs together to make a comeback in the race on the last 5 meters. I was very close to victory, but I placed second.”

Q: What are your goals for next season?

“My goal for the next season is to be victorious in both the 400m and 800m by ensuring I remain consistent in my training. I know I will be victorious and make my family, parish and school proud. I would also be aiming to make the CARIFTA team to represent my country.”

With talent, purpose, and a steady focus on the bigger picture, Romel Charles is carving out a legacy that’s about more than just wins. It’s about impact and he’s only just getting started.
